Dry run capability, fast start-up, reduced NOx emissions; they’re all adding up to greater profitability for Kapaia Power.
According to Ken Daubert, Plant Superintendent for the Kapaia Power Station of Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii, USA:
“IST’s Once Through Steam Generator (OTSG) is highly efficient in recovering our gas turbine’s exhaust heat in the form of super-heated steam. The steam is injected back into the gas turbine in two ways; first, adding mass flow to the combustor which increases MW output without burning additional fuel, and secondly, into the fuel nozzles which greatly reduces NOx emissions and demand on the plant’s SCR system. Since commissioning in 2002, maintenance on this highly reliable boiler has been minimal, and the fast startup time enables us to get the power plant on line, with full steam injection in less than one hour."
In 2002, the Kauai facility retrofitted an IST OTSG to permit steam injection into its simple cycle LM2000 turbine. During the installation phase, the turbine was out of service for less than one week!
